When did you realise you wanted to be a designer?

MW: Wednesday, June 16th, 1982, 11:32 when I was forcefully kicked out of the Design Academy Eindhoven.

GC: During an Archeological expedition of 4 months in the Kurdistan desert. Before design, I was very passionate about antiques and ancient cultures. During that experience we unveiled artifacts from 3000 BC, and I was blown away about the beauty and richness found in my hands after 5000 years, thinking of how amazing it is that objects could tell such a rich history from our past, regarding cultures, habits, crafts, and arts. From that moment, the idea started growing of creating beautiful objects that would fulfill our daily needs yet carry meaningful stories for the future generations to discover.


What is artificial light for you?

MW: Artificial light is light resulting of intentional human creation, I consider human creation a natural phenomenon and so “I classify artificial light as Natural”.

GC: There is no artificial or natural light. There are different sources of light. As nature has its own sources such as the sun and stars, which defines the cycles of life, we created our own sources to enlighten our lives, our objects, and environments, and to keep us away from darkness.


Why do you like working with Flos?

MW: “I learn from the Best”.

GC: Flos is the most creative, passionate, and innovative lighting company there is. They are incredibly precise and disciplined, being at the same time ahead of times, pushing the boundaries of technology and typologies beyond imaginable. Any challenge in Flos is a path worth taking.


What is the next object you’d like to design?

MW: I was always sad Earth has one single lonely moon, I would love to create two more.

GC: A unisex clothing collection.

Is there a great designer, artist, or musician you regard as a point of reference for your work?

MW: There is an endless amount of creatives and non-creatives I have learned from,pointing out only One would be unrespectful. I rather recognize my whole brother- and sisterhood of creatives.

GC: Most forms of arts in different ways and moments in time has probably influenced meand my work. However, I also regard as great influence for the work we do today, some incredible encounters and experiences we had with our clients, thanks to their vision,knowledge, heritage, craft, and experience.
